Jean Paul (JP) Allain
Dr. Jean Paul Allain is the Associate Director of Science for Fusion Energy Sciences (SC-FES) in the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC). Dr. Allain is on leave from the Pennsylvania State University where he is Department Head and Professor of the Ken and Mary Lindquist Department of Nuclear Engineering. He holds the Lloyd and Dorothy Foehr Huck Chair in Plasma Medicine in the Huck Institutes for Life Sciences. He is also an Institute for Computational and Data Sciences faculty Co-hire, affiliate professor of Biomedical Engineering and associated faculty in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Physics from the California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, a M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Allain led the Radiation Surface Science and Engineering Lab (RSSEL) and has co-authored with his students over 350 peer-reviewed manuscripts and proceedings papers in experimental and computational modeling work in particle and plasma-surface interactions with high-temperature materials in nuclear fusion and plasma technology.
Dr. Allain is an internationally recognized scholar in the areas of self-organized nanostructures with directed irradiation synthesis to enable multi-functional and multi-scale properties at surface and interfaces of dissimilar material systems (e.g. polymer and metals, ceramics and biomaterials). His group’s research areas include advanced functional bio interfaces, advanced nuclear fusion interfaces, multi-scale computational irradiation surface science, nanostructured functional materials, adaptive and self-healing interfaces, sustainable nanomanufacturing, and in-situ, in-operando material surface diagnostics.
Dr. Allain has also been recognized by numerous awards including Argonne National Lab’s Distinguished Award 2003-2006, Best Teacher Awards in 2008 at Purdue and 2013 at Illinois, Department of Energy Early Career Award in 2010,the Research Excellence Award in 2011, the Fulbright Scholar Award in 2015, Faculty Entrepreneurial Fellow in 2016, Dean’s Excellence in Research Award in2017, the 2018 American Nuclear Society Fusion Energy Division Technology Accomplishment Award and the IEEE NPSS Fusion Technology Award in 2023.
Dr. Allain leads the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences since 2023 and has been instrumental in establishing the new Building Bridges vision with a strategy to develop a national Fusion Science& Technology Roadmap to guide priorities and funding. Under his leadership SC FES has established the Fusion Innovation Research Engine (FIRE) Collaboratives, Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) Hubs, new strategic international partnerships with the UK, Japan, and Germany, and multiple public-private partnership programs including the Milestone-based Fusion Development program, Private Facility Research, and Fusion BRIDGE.
