Shana Helton

Shana R. Helton serves as Director, Division of Fuel Management in the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards.

Ms. Helton joined the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2002. Since joining the NRC, she has served in several progressively more responsible technical and project management positions, and served as a Executive Technical Assistant in the Office of the Executive Director for Operations. Her leadership career began as the Chief of the Rulemaking Branch in Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, followed by her appointment as Deputy Chief of Staff in the former Chairman Macfarlane’s office, and selection as a reactor licensing branch chief. In 2017 Ms. Helton was selected for the Senior Executive Service (SES) and has since served in several executive positions in the materials, reactor, new reactor, and security program areas, including Deputy Director, Division of Safety Systems; and Deputy Director, Division of Engineering, NRR; the acting Director of the Division of Engineering and Infrastructure, NRO, the Director of Division of Physical and Cyber Security Policy in the Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response (NSIR), and acting Deputy Office Director of NSIR. In 2021, Ms. Helton was appointed the Director, Division of Fuel Management in the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards.

Ms. Helton received a Bachelor’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois and a Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences from the University of Michigan. She is a graduate of the 2004 Nuclear Safety Professional Development Program, the 2010 Leadership Potential Program, and the 2017 SES Candidate Development Program.
