Improving Outcomes, Informing Decisions: Performance Monitoring and Evaluation at the NRC

Sponsored by the Office of the Executive Director for Operations

Federal agencies are required to incorporate evidence-based practices into their operations under laws such as the Evidence Act, the Government Performance and Results Act Modernization Act of 2010, the Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act, and the ADVANCE Act. This digital exhibit highlights how the NRC uses performance monitoring and evaluation as a central tool within its Planning, Budgeting, and Performance Management framework to strengthen accountability and inform decision making. Regular monitoring mechanisms, such as the Programmatic Senior Assessment Team and the Performance Improvement Panel, provide structured reviews that help identify gaps, assess risks, and drive timely improvements. Targeted evaluations complement these monitoring activities by addressing priority questions tied to the NRC’s Strategic Plan. Through real-world examples and clear visuals, the exhibit demonstrates how mandated performance monitoring—reinforced by evaluation—enables the NRC to make smarter, risk-informed choices and continuously improve program effectiveness and ensure progress toward its safety and security mission.
