John Stamatakos
Dr. John Stamatakos is a geologist and geophysicist who holds a PhD (1990) from Lehigh University. He is currently an Institute Scientist at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, which he joined in 1995. Prior to that, he was on the faculty at the University of Michigan and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. At SwRI, Dr. Stamatakos has performed basic and applied research on natural phenomena hazards, mainly related to probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA). This work has included seismic hazard studies for numerous commercial nuclear facilities in the U.S. and abroad, mainly in support of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Dr. Stamatakos co-authored several important seismic hazard documents, including updated guidelines for Senior Seismic Hazard Analysis Committee (SSHAC) studies (NUREG 2213) and the American Nuclear Standard for probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (ANSI/ANS-2.29-2020). He was also the Project Technical Integrator (PTI) for the recent SSHAC Level-3 study in South Africa, he served on Participatory Peer Review Panels (PPRP) for SSHAC Level-2 and Level-3 studies in the U.S. and in Spain, and he was a member of the Seismic Source Characterization Team for the Idaho National Laboratory SSHAC Level-3 study. He has also worked with seismic engineers and seismic risk analysts to develop new regulatory guidance for seismic design of new and advanced nuclear power reactors.
